With this joke I start this article. On Friday the highly anticipated Windows 8, which together with the launch of iPhone 5 and Ubuntu 12.10, they form the trinity of what today they call the post-desktop world. The Free Software Foundation could not be absent before such a launch, and so Ruben Rodriguez (quidam), Founder of Trisquel GNU / Linux, accompanied by a guy with the head of a wildebeest and one more companion, went around handing out free copies of triskele to those who were queuing to buy the new Windows 8.
I will not criticize what they did since they were in their right and did not bother anyone. They just handed out flyers and DVDs. But there is always a but. I wonder if buyers would pay so much attention to quidam. It's like giving Iron Maiden records to quinceañeras going to a Justin Bieber concert (popcorn, soda, who wants?)
Obviously I would never queue to buy a Windows 8 for lots of reasonsSecure Boot, Metro interface, unnecessary bloatware, etc.) But if any driver my machine works with firmware not free, having a 100% free distro wouldn't be a good idea either. Those who read already know my position my article about him firmware.
The interesting thing about it is the situation he is going through at home now. We have a Ubuntu which you already know how it goes, Debian who still talks about how to approach the FSF, Fedora coming delaying its version 18 for several weeks, a KDE which has overcome the difficulties it had with version 4.0, except its heaviness, a GNOME who has yet to overcome them, a Xfce that still does not dare to leave GTK2, etc. And then they say that we have to take advantage of the discontent that can come up with Windows 8 (which in the worst case would make Vista was even better) but above all, we are waiting for the Linux Foundation dates the prebootloader savior... Ah, I forgot, Steam for Linux, worst heart attack of RMS since the Open Source schism (ok ok, I admit that I was harsh with him and I apologize).
I have nothing else to say. To finish, I'll just say that in a few months I'm going to buy a new laptop, AND IT WAS BETTER THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE PRIVATE DRIVERS in order to install a triskele, keep my mouth shut and never again screw up the FSFistas. For now, the ones that interest me come with Windows 7 pre-installed, although I have seen other laptops that because of their characteristics do not interest me, but that come with FreeDOS pre-installed and that's worth an article for another day.
Kde is not heavy, to be heavy it should occupy 2 or 3 GB, since 4 GB is the standard today.
It is heavy if it occupies 4 GB on an 8 GB hard drive. But is it heavy on a 500GB disk? Is it heavy on a 256GB hard drive? I do not think so.
My KDE starts consuming less than 300MB of RAM… hehe… 😀
Mine is the same. XD
«... accompanied by a guy with a wildebeest head ...»
Be very careful if you go out at night looking for tomatoes. Your eyesight fails you a bit :-P.
As the monkey mario says: "Eh? And the boobs? Where are they?"
I've seen women with fewer boobs than me ... that I doubt is the point. The thing is that the texture, of a man, a man with hair on the chest, is not xD
Hahahahaha, that wildebeest is a her, hahahaha.
haha, yes, it's incredible that they didn't notice because of the boots and stockings, the build, the hands, etc .. 😛
hahahahaha, whatever, if given a chance, I would also wear that wildebeest costume, it shows that it was a fun experience and with a good cause.
I came back to Windows after spending a long time on Linux for personal reasons, however, I loved Linux and when I have my second computer I will install it. Of course, I prefer to go back to Linux before using Windows 8, by far the worst option for a PC, it is more for tablets.
or____0
What a good strip hahahaha it gives me more terror to use Winbug $, because when I least expect it, it crashes, which with Linux Mint is great 😀
It hurts to say, but Linux also hangs. That it hangs less is another thing.
No operating system is or will be free of errors, the software in general is not and will not be free of errors, another thing is the frequency and severity of these, but avoiding errors in software 100% is almost impossible, if not impossible.
It is literally impossible. It is something I learned in software engineering. Therefore, one of the most important questions is knowing when the tests should end.
totally agree, the software, no matter how perfect it is, is made by humans, and humans are experts in making mistakes, sometimes the programming tends to be a bit volatile, like an unstable chemical hahaha, what happens is that, when you come of windoze and its errors, it seems to you that linux did not have them, until you run into one and throw in the towel, then you return to windoze, that is if you are a lazy and lazy person 😛
Hi there!!! ^^
Troll Detect XD
I want to buy that costume
I quote: -> But if any driver of my machine worked with non-free firmware <-
Well, before buying the machine, find out that everything works freely
I use 100% free debian, and before buying anything, I inform myself, otherwise I don't buy it
The problem lies in the country you live in and how complicated it is to get a computer that has all its drivers released.
Another thing is how cumbersome it is to investigate the different laptop models for hours trying to find every possible detail ... perhaps what Diazepan meant was that he wants to buy a pc without worrying about not being able to use Linux on it without having To go on the odyssey of investigating, and don't tell me "that's easy to do" because I doubt that in 15 minutes you will have achieved absolutely everything you needed bro.
I also used 100% free Debian until recently (now I just installed Adobe flash because Gnash crashes on me) but when my machine was bought nobody noticed that it was minimally compatible with Linux, in fact, they didn't even know what it was GNU / Linux. And the same with my laptop, that when I acquired it in 2008 who did not even know what Linux was rather it was me.
I correct: Not even*
Oh yeah. When it comes to video cards, they are very detailed and one is more cautious (ATI, NVIDIA, some Intel ……. I'm lost). But when it comes to wireless, they don't even tell you what brand it is and you have to go to the manufacturers page to check it (Atheros, Realtek, Broadcom ……… I'm also lost)
Oh, and don't even count on them having free BIOS, nobody here knows what a Lemote Yeelong is.
The initiative seems excellent to me. Why? Well, because there are many Windows users who do not know that GNU / Linux exists.
It really depends on the distribution you offer as an alternative, which does not give them a bad impression.
Well, one that comes with KDE by default I don't think it disappoints. 🙂
KDE SC 4.9.2 HEAVY !? Hahahahahaha… x'D
what a good job the trisquel boys do! 🙂
Jeez, another way to show how Nerd they can be. What is the goal of delivering free copies of Linux in the middle of the sale of Windows 8 ??? ... They are determined to knock MS off the podium of operating systems ... stop the hatred and pain ... and fanaticism. Linus Torvalds said "That the SL community has no other enemy than itself."
The Hate / pain here maybe you have. It is a good gesture what those in the news have done since it is a good place to report that there are alternatives in a peaceful and funny way, the truth even I would have done it and not because I think they are going to install it, but because do educational work. Please stop the victimizing fanaticism that free software is good for all.
@Kasco
What a turnip.
