Things I do after installing LMDE Xfce

A couple of days ago I settled in LMDE Xfce to test it and here are some things that I do after installing it to have it to my complete taste.

1st step: Update.

Installation LMDE Xfce is exactly the same as LMDE GnomeSo guys, if you were expecting something else, I'm sorry. In this part Linux Mint has managed to standardize its installers and I think it is excellent. Well, after installing, what you have to do is update.

If you are a user of LMDE, you know that you have at your disposal some repositories prepared especially for you, but I always use those of Debian Testing, But do what I say and not what I do. So since you are good guys, you would have to put in the file / Etc / apt / sources.list these:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

We open the Update Manager and update 😀

2nd step: Remove unnecessary packages.

LMDE sins of the same problem Xubuntu, they put Xfce things of Gnome to the fool. So I grab Synaptic or the terminal and remove all this:

$ sudo aptitude purge apache2.2-bin exim4-config gcalctool gnome-about gnome-bluetooth gnome-desktop-data gnome-desktop3-data gnome-dictionary gnome-doc-utils gnome-js-common gnome-keyring gnome-mag gnome-media  gnome-media-common gnome-menus gnome-ppp gnome-search-tool gnome-session-canberra gnome-session- common gnome-settings-daemon gnome-system-log gnome-system-monitor gnome-system-tools gthumb nautilus-gksu  nautilus-open-terminal nautilus-sendto nautilus-sendto-empathy samba samba-common eog gir1.2-peas-1.0 gnome-user-share libapache2-mod-dnssd libgnome-desktop-3-0 libgnome-media0 libpeas-1.0-0 libseed-gtk3-0  samba-common-bin yelp

It's curious. Yes already Xfce It has its own System Monitor What do I want the one for Gnome? That's why I delete it, just like EOG (Eye of Gnome), that's what I have to GPicView and gcalctool I replace it with galculator. So I install:

$ sudo aptitude install galculator xfce4-taskmanager gpicview

Step 3: Setting up the system

Now comes the part where I save some resources. To do this I kill processes at startup with RCConf and I remove applications that start together with Xfce. With RCConf uncheck:

cryptdisks
cups
portmap
pppd-dns
rsyslog
heal
ufw

Then i go to Menu »Settings» Session and Startup »Applications Autostart and uncheck everything that I don't need, as you can see in the image below:

Then I put a Global Proxy to the system, because we already know that Xfce does not bring it.

We edit the file / etc / environment and we put this inside:

# Proxy Global
http_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
https_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
ftp_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
no_proxy="10.10.0.0/24"

Where 10.10.0.5 is the IP of the proxy server. We save and edit the file / Etc / profile and we put at the end:

# Proxy Global
export http_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
export https_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
export ftp_proxy="http://10.10.0.5:3128"
export no_proxy="10.10.0.0/24"

4th step: Personalization.

The last thing I have left is to customize a little Xfce. As you can see in the image above, I use as a theme for xfwm a ambience, and for controls, Mint-X-Xfce. Now this step is to the taste of each one. For example, I have put as in Gnome and almost the same arrangement of the elements. I leave you a screenshot:

Hahaha I've been writing a famous "things to do after installing archlinux" for a long time and it has a lot of tips (obviously for gnome) and recommendations, but I always get something else to add or remove, because I started it with gnome 2.32 and good with the version changes take things out, new ones come in.

Obvious as the name says it is all post installation of graphic server and desktop, they are things to polish the diamond, things that I get from the wiki mostly, from pages in English or Spanish to a lesser extent, I don't know why people find it difficult to get things on the wiki, but it would be good to get a good job as the Spanish say with a super guide for dummies.

Let's see if one day I'll finish it and pass it on for you to publish it, I'm not going to create a blog, I'll send the first troll to me ****

I'm not going to create a blog, I'll send the first troll to me ****

Hahahaha the number of times I've done that on my blog hahahaha, and with elav and KZKG ^ Gaara as witnesses hahahaha.

For the rest I did not know that LMDE needed so much

      1.    elav <° Linux said

LMDE doesn't need that much, LMDE Xfce to fulfill my needs, yes. But what may be a problem for me, not for others. That depends on each one.

For the rest I did not know that LMDE needed so much

Uff ... there you hit the nail on the head ... they say that LMDE is something ready to use, with codecs installed by default and everything, but the reality is that you still have to make adjustments. Nothing that only that detail hehe.

        1.    elav <° Linux said

Don't be a flamer. At least LMDE is more ready to use than your beloved Arch, to which you have to put everything to make it work fairly. And I repeat, we are not talking here about LMDE, but about LMDE Xfce, which is not the same. Go form wars for the house of c *****

          1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

It is not fighting wars, it is simply that LMDE (Xfce) is not as ready as it is often said, or at least it can be better than the developers do.

And don't bring Arch into this, KISS has nothing to do with LMDE, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.

          2.    Edward2 said

As they say in the anime Oe! Oeee! don't mess with arch. Or the big one is armed.

It's not my fault that the one from La Arena, is throwing hints to annoy .. 😛

No, don't start with the usual (even if it's joke).

Which distro doesn't need tweaking? None

          1.    elav <° Linux said

            Amen

    2.    elav <° Linux said

Hahaha .. Poor little trollies .. I know who you are going to send first if you make a blog .. Hahahaha…

You know we'd be happy to post anything about Arch you have out there, so when you get excited, here we are.

      1.    Courage said

And they darn me, right? LOL.

I have one from ArchBang (installation) and another from KahelOS, I will copy them and pass them to you so that you can do whatever you want with them

        1.    elav <° Linux said

Don't feel left out, little troll Courage, you know we adore you hahahaha. Nah, anything you want to contribute is of course welcome. Not just you, all the people interested in sharing an article with the rest of the world, in DesdeLinux We published it without problems. 😀

If we were fortune-tellers, believe me everything would be very different HAHA.
At least I did not know you had those tutorials, send them by email and we will put them, and obviously we will clearly say that they are tutorials made by you, and we will leave your contact email (only if you want obviously).

And come on ... don't be jealous, we'll publish Eduar2 tutorials and yours too LOL !!!!

          1.    Courage said

Haha well I'll send them, but I thought you knew the one from KahelOS

    3.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

With great pleasure we publish it, we will even learn several tips ourselves hahaha.
And come on, trolls are fun in the end HAHAHAHAHA, look at Courage and you (Troll # 1 and # 2 official LOL).

Nothing I look forward to that guide 😉

If you knew what fun I had with some articles I wrote ...

It is a good thing about this blog, here people are treated as if they have known them for a lifetime

Nah, we are colleagues ... we have known each other for a while, and although you sent the c ***** to elav a long time ago, I still like you ... in fact, you do not know how much we laughed when we read that comment of yours sending to fly far away to elav, we thought you were sick in the head HAHAHA!

In summary, here we are all like a big family, we have known each other for a long time or even if they are new readers, we treat everyone in the best possible way 😉

          1.    Courage said

Of course, if instead of happening as it happened and it had been the other way around, it would have been a good mess.

I see that you don't get mad about things or at least you don't keep it, I like that and I apologized to elav for what happened, I didn't read the "na, it's fucking" and I felt bad afterwards.

Blogs like this one (which is young) with the deal already earn quite a few visits with the deal, they like a more serious deal more than maybe, without necessarily being a dry deal.

I take this opportunity to say that you already have the tutorials in your email inbox, both of you

            1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Yup, this site / blog is still young haha, we appreciate any help or support you give us, this way our articles can reach more users of the network 😉

We already have the email, although the images seem to have not reached us, if you can send them in a .TAR.GZ 😉
Greetings and really friend, thanks for everything, it's great to have readers like you.

          2.    Courage said

Ok, I'm going to see that about the photos, the bad thing is that you have to order them

            1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

              Don't worry, it's not that annoying 🙂

Elav, do you know about memory consumption compared to LMDE gnome? How's it going?

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Well I'll tell you that when I optimize Gnome2 on Debian, it starts with 99Mb more or less, with LMDE Xfce, after doing all this, it lifts me with 79Mb.

Consumption may even match that of Gnome, but it feels like the applications open faster, that is, they are lighter.

      regards

      1.    Eduardo said

Gnome 2 on Debian I have it quite polished and it goes super fast, but when starting it requires more than 99 MB. Have you already published all the modifications you have made to make it so light?

        1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Hello, how are you, and my apologies for the delay but: WELCOME !!! (I.e.
We have published several tutorials for LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition), which is actually Debian but with some packages installed by default, these tutorials will help you make Gnome2 consume much less RAM, its performance is better and trust me, you will notice the improvement :
[Part three] LMDE in depth: Optimizing even more.
[Fourth part] LMDE in depth: Gaining in performance

You can also download our complete guide, it will surely help you: LMDE Guide: First Review

Well that, go through those links and tell us how it went.
Greetings and once again, welcome to our site 🙂

Hello Elav, I have done what you explain and almost everything has gone well, only now it asks me for the Wi-Fi password every time I connect, I don't know what happens in memory as before, what have I done wrong?

    1.    elav <° Linux said

😕 Maybe it's something related to Gnome Keyring, but without more data I wouldn't know how to tell you.

      1.    Road Runner said

Yes sir, I have installed gnome-keyring and it remembers again, but I would like another option that did not come from gnome, but hey I don't think I notice a difference in performance, Thanks, for everything 😉

Hello elav, your posts about LMDE and especially Xfce are very interesting
I get a question: Is it completely safe to remove all those Gnome packages as samples in step # 2?
And one more thing if it is not annoying, the key manager (I think it is seahorse) of Gnome, in Xfce there is any replacement?
    Goodbye
